The campaign is a smart and varied action spectacle that keeps you on your toes as it explores paranoid thriller tropes set against global events in the 1990s. Meanwhile, the multiplayer’s new omni-movement makes matches feel fast and fluid. A load of inventive new maps that let you explore the space in a variety of ways, and revisions to the perks system helps you specialize to fit your preferred playstyle. Call of Duty has earned its reputation for a reason, and this latest release shows why. The triumphant return of a legacy CRPG series is also one of the best games of 2023.
Through its dramatic rise from the ashes of its original disastrous launch and subsequent expansions, FFXIV has slowly morphed from a relatively generic good-versus-evil plot into a sprawling, fanstastical political thriller. The latest expansion, Dawntrail, may have had some growing pains as it established a compelling new era, but in its best moments it lives up to what has made this MMORPG so special for all these years. While the sequel, Doom Eternal, arguably improved on the combat by making it even more technical, for us nothing beats the relative purity and simplicity of the satisfying slug-fests of Doom. Undertale is a delightfully inventive exercise in subverting expectations.

I usually don’t even go for that sort of thing—I like RPGs and systemic interactions and other crusty PC gaming things. But The Great Circle had scenes that were so imaginative and surprising, I was just 100% on-board. An early one sees Indy catching a ride on a departing zeppelin by hooking it with his trusty whip, followed by a short sequence of climbing and ledge shimmying on the outside of the dirigible as Rome sprawls below you.

The mysteries are just as tricky as ever, letting you pore over the evidence until the answer suddenly clicks. While it is clearly a puzzle game, it frequently twists the medium on its head. It encourages you to use a notebook in real life to help track its many secrets and interlocking pieces, which all unfold into a marriage of design and narrative that need to be seen firsthand. The puzzles can be challenging, but they’re consistently satisfying and help drive you forward to the next one. Hades 2 is still in early access, and only available on PC so far.
Exploring the mansion and interacting with its different mechanisms is easy to do, but so satisfying when completed. As I alluded to in the introduction, I reached Room 46 in less than a third of what my current playtime is, and I assure you, between writing this review and when it will be published, I’ll have likely put in another 5-10 hours. Reaching Room 46 is only just scratching the surface of this incredible puzzle game. Beginning the story with a treasure hunt primes the player perfectly to go into each room scrutinizing every aspect, tracking down and making note of things that interest you, and testing out as many theories as you can. I had an incredible time noting down the leads that I was currently tailing, and even I was starting to get a bit overwhelmed when that list got into the double digits.
